The Ritual Fragrance Gift Guide
Choosing a fragrance as a gift can feel overwhelming. You’re trying to think about what the person you’re shopping for has liked before, what you know about them, and what they might enjoy, all without being able to experience the scent yourself.
That’s what makes fragrance especially tricky when shopping online. You’re relying on descriptions and memory, without the ability to smell or sample what you’re choosing.
This guide is here to make that process easier. I’ll walk you through the fragrance wheel and how it can help you narrow things down, then take a closer look at individual scent profiles so you can confidently choose the perfect Ritual gift.
The Ritual Fragrance Wheel
The fragrance wheel is a simple way to understand how different scent families relate and differentiate to one another. It organizes fragrances into categories like Fresh, Woody, Oriental, and Floral, and then breaks those down even further into subcategories (for example, Floral can include soft florals or floral orientals).
Below is a guide to each Ritual fragrance (including a few that haven’t been released yet) and where they fall within the wheel.
The easiest way to use this is to start with what you already know. If the person you’re shopping for tends to gravitate toward woody scents like pine or cedar, you can find that section on the wheel and then look for Ritual fragrances that match.

Fragrance Pairing
The fragrance wheel is a great place to start, but it doesn’t capture every scent from each family. In the next section, we’ll break each family down a bit further so you can confidently choose the perfect Ritual product!
The “Fresh” Fragrance Family
Fresh fragrances usually comprise citrus, water, and green notes, which means they have refreshing, zesty, and vibrant smells. They are reminiscent of herbal and leafy scents such as rosemary and mint and produce crisp, zingy, and aromatic notes with underlying woody tones. Fresh fragrances are the most diverse family on the wheel, as they can be oceanic, citrusy, bright, or herbal.

Example: My dad loves the smell of the ocean and prefers lighter scents.
Solution: The Fresh family is very diverse, but does include light scents in the Water and Green subfamilies. For this gift, I would choose Ocean Breeze for the lightest scent, or go with a more subtly earthy one with Rainy Day in the Water family.
The “Floral” Fragrance Family
As the name suggests, this family includes anything with a sweet and flowery scent. It’s one of the broadest families and can range from light and delicate to complex and intense. This family includes florals such as rose, jasmine, orange blossom, and lily of the valley.
RITUAL PRODUCTS FROM THE “FLORAL” FAMILY
-
New Beginnings (seasonal)
-
Patisserie (not released yet)
Example: I’m wanting something fruity, but not overly sweet.
Solution: New Beginnings is a great option, with notes of cranberry, orange, and champagne. It’s more zesty that sweet and has a lovely bright fragrance.
The “Oriental” Fragrance Family
The Oriental subfamily is synonymous with the Amber subfamily. This group of fragrances is warm, sweet, and luxurious. They’re often considered sensual and exotic since they include notes of cardamom, cinnamon, and vanilla and floral notes such as jasmine, orchid, and orange blossom.

After Hours (coming May 1, 2026)
Rendezvous (coming May 1, 2026)
Example: My mom likes vanilla fragrances, but not just vanilla because it’s too much for her. I’m not quite sure what she would like because she likes a lot of different fragrances with vanilla.
Solution: There’s a few options you could try. Sun Kissed is known for it’s warm vanilla notes blended with coconut for a tropical, summer fragrance. Warm Blanket is a bold vanilla and cinnamon fragrance that’s perfect as a seasonal option. Rendezvous is a new release that has black cardamom and cream, which smells just like vanilla and is blended with earthy notes like moss and mushroom.
The “Woody” Fragrance Family
The Woody Family is warm, timeless, and captivating, with cedarwood, sandalwood, vetiver, and amber scents. Woody scents are earthy, smoky, or leathery and are described as being opulent and mysterious.
These fragrances bring a sense of grounding and sophistication to any space. The woody aromas evoke images of wandering through a serene forest, enveloping you in a cozy embrace.
RITUAL PRODUCTS FROM THE “WOODY” FAMILY

Prairie Fairy (not released yet)
-
Home On The Range (not released yet)
Example: My friend’s favorite scent from a different candle company has pine or some other tree smell. It also smells a little like leather. He prefers traditional masculine fragrances.
Solution: Sequoia Sunset would be an excellent option. It’s a blend of redwoods and leather with a hint of white orris (floral) to help balance the fragrance.
To summarize…
Once you have a good idea of which fragrance family and/or subfamily you’re shopping for, it becomes much easier to pick out scents they’ll enjoy. I’ve been able to narrow down which fragrance families my friends and family members gravitate towards the most, and it gives me a really good idea of what they may enjoy.
Always remember that when giving a gift, it’s the thought and effort that counts the most.
Use this guide any time you’re looking for a candle or fragrance gift!
